BODIES OF WORK: From The Ground Up [2007-08]

While visiting Turkey and Syria I noticed I was mostly looking up to see the architecture of the mosques and the homes of the people. I began to place my camera on the ground and utilized the self-timer to create my images. The resulting images not only showed these cities from an unusual point of view but they also captured my feelings of disorientation as a visitor in a new place moving through a foreign culture.

The vulnerability of placing my camera on the ground and experimental nature of photographing without visually framing the images through the viewfinder invited interaction and curiosity from passersby. I am interested in new ways of imaging what we have seen so many times before. Using playfulness in the creation of the images and looking up at others as opposed to looking down, this series of images welcomes and acknowledges the similarities and differences of our cultures.
