BODIES OF WORK: Wound Dressings [1993]
Although we speak of "living in the present" we each carry with us aspects of ourselves that are deeply rooted in our past. This includes our present social, sexual and gender constructs.
Inspired by the phototherapy work of Jo Spence and Rosy Martin, I "dress up" to de-mask, negotiate and (re)construct my identity as I move from (female) present self to younger self to mother to brother to a fantasized (male) self. Toned photographs, in the colors of a child's palette, speak of the pain and pleasure of past and present.
