In The Mourning, 2003

This body of work continues my exploration of the interconnectedness of life and death, concentrating on my own process of mourning the loss of my mother. Pressing my body against the surface of a flatbed scanner as it captured stillness or movement, I attempted to honor the scope of my loss. The slowness and physicality of this process provided me with a space to reflect on my own mourning process, which I observed over 3 years, and which took physical form in the act of not cutting my hair, wearing only black and in permanent tattoo markings.
